Latin Word Match
Match Latin vocabulary with its closest English meaning. The game focuses on the same words that appear in VooWood's guides to light, darkness, fire, strength and courage.
How to play
Select a Latin word on the left, then select its English meaning on the right. Correct pairs lock in place. Wrong pairs remain available and add one mistake. Standard mode has no timer; optional Challenge mode uses a 90-second countdown.
What this puzzle teaches or tests
Latin words rarely map one-to-one onto every English sense. This game helps you learn the core vocabulary behind VooWood's Latin guides. Open any matched pair's related guide for deeper context.
Vocabulary with historical context
Latin Word Match asks you to pair forms such as lux, fortis, umbra and aurora with concise English meanings. Standard mode has no clock; challenge mode adds a ninety-second limit. Correct pairs lock in place, while an incorrect attempt remains available so you can reconsider it.
The game treats a Latin dictionary word as vocabulary unless there is separate evidence that it also functioned as a personal name. That distinction matters for forms such as Valens or Victor, which have name history, and fortis or tenebrae, which are primarily words. Related guides provide the fuller grammatical and historical notes.
Challenge mode adds urgency without changing the definitions. If the clock expires, the round ends and you can immediately start again. Standard mode is better for learning a new group of words because there is time to compare similar ideas such as strength, courage, power and victory.
Pay attention to part of speech and number when reading the linked guides. For example, an adjective meaning strong, a noun meaning strength and a plural noun used for darkness describe related themes but are not direct substitutes. The matching board begins with short glosses and the articles supply those finer distinctions.
